Election strategist Prashant Kishor has provided critical insights into the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) devastating loss in the Delhi Assembly elections. He pointed out that Arvind Kejriwal’s delayed resignation following his arrest in the alleged liquor scam played a significant role in the party’s downfall. According to Kishor, Kejriwal should have stepped down immediately after his arrest rather than after securing bail, as this delay created confusion among the voters. Moreover, appointing a temporary chief minister before the elections further weakened AAP’s position. The decision to replace Kejriwal right before the polls sent a message of instability, which the BJP successfully capitalized on to secure a decisive victory.
The Impact of Political Flip-Flopping and Governance Failures
Beyond the leadership crisis, Kishor emphasized Kejriwal’s inconsistent political stance as another key factor in AAP’s defeat. Initially, Kejriwal aligned with the India Bloc, which included leaders like Lalu Yadav and Sonia Gandhi, against whom he had previously campaigned. Later, he chose to walk out of the alliance and contest the elections alone, further damaging his credibility. This back-and-forth confused voters and weakened public trust in AAP. Additionally, governance issues such as waterlogging, poor road conditions, and ineffective administration contributed to the party’s failure. Kishor highlighted how the hardships faced by Delhi’s residents, particularly those in slum areas, exposed the inefficiencies in Kejriwal’s governance model, leading to voter dissatisfaction.

AAP’s ten-year rule in Delhi ended in a crushing defeat, with the party securing only 22 seats compared to BJP’s 48-seat majority. Kejriwal himself suffered a personal loss in the New Delhi constituency, where he was defeated by BJP’s Parvesh Verma by over 4,000 votes. This landslide defeat has raised questions about Kejriwal’s political future and his standing in the national opposition. According to Kishor, AAP’s failures were not just due to anti-incumbency but also a series of strategic blunders. Kejriwal’s inconsistent policies, lack of strong governance, and internal instability ultimately led to the party’s downfall. With this loss, AAP now faces the challenge of rebuilding its political identity and regaining public trust ahead of future elections.
